Top 10 free shooters to play in 2012

For a sub-genre of MMO’s that hasn’t been around all that long, there are an absolute slew of free to play MMOFPS, MMOTPS and multiplayer online shooter games on the market. It’s not surprising really; this genre is like the perfect melding of two seemingly disparate things. The relentless action and excitement of shooters, with the joy of  social features and item collecting found in RPG’s. With so many new entries out there, we figured we’d help you sort through them all with this list of the Top 10 Free Shooters to Play in 2012.

10. S4 League
This anime-inspired 3D MMOTPS is quite different from everything else out there, featuring standard shooting modes like deathmatch, to go with its own unique, team-based modes. There’s also a good deal of character and equipment customization.

9. Battlefield Heroes
Battlefield Heroes is a charming 3D free to play cel-shaded MMOTPS game. It features several modes, vehicles, and weapons to master, and skills to unlock. Battlefield Heroes has a great sense of humor that runs through the entire game and adds to its charm. Those looking for solid shooting action in a funny and stylish package should enter this battlefield.

8. Combat Arms
One of the most popular free to play FPS game for a reason; Combat Arms features great balance, a ton of content, and is plain fun to play. There’s tons of equipment customizing, though equipment comes with the slightly annoying wrinkle that it’s timed and does not last forever.

7. Alliance of Valiant Arms
Alliance of Valiant Arms (AVA) offers up tons of awesome game modes, near-limitless customization, and some of the tightest shooting gameplay to be found online. It’s good looking and stable, thanks to the Unreal Engine powering its thirst for blood, and runs nearly lag free.

6. Battlefield Play4Free
The second venture of Electronic Arts in the free-to-play genre with the Battlefield name (after the cartoony Battlefield Heroes), Battlefield Play4Free is a more serious game. Based mostly on the acclaimed Battlefield 2 game, this FPS offers 32-player battles in a Middle East setting. Players choose between the United States and Russia sides and enter some exhilarating FPS action. There are 16 vehicles to use in the game maps, such as helicopters, tanks and fighter jets,  making things even more chaotic.

5. Blacklight: Retribution
Blacklight: Retribution is the follow-up to Blacklight: Tango Down, a 2010 downloadable shooter that earned some mixed reviews. This free-to-play FPS fixes some of the problems of the original title and adds some much needed quality to the genre. Among the distinctive features are the HRV (that lets you look through walls for partners and enemies) and the hardsuit, an hulking armor pretty much similar to a mech. With great graphics, customizable weapons and fast and furious gameplay, Blacklight: Retribution is well worth seeking out by fans of rock-solid FPS games.

4. Global Agenda: Free Agent
After a warm critical reception, developer Hi-Rez Studio decided to drop the subscription on their jetpack-powered MMO shooter Global Agenda, and later opted for the addition of a free-to-play model. And then Global Agenda: Free Agent was revealed. Global Agenda: Free Agent offers some exciting team-based PvP gameplay and Agency vs. Agency territory conflict in a third-person perspective. The crisp graphics and polished presentation make this game truly shine.

3. Tribes Ascend
With the experience gained with Global Agenda, it’s hard to think of a better suited studio than Hi-Rez to work on the popular Tribes franchise. Tribes: Ascend fully delivered on what fans were expecting of it, offering exciting and fast-paced FPS combat where jetpacks truly make a difference. The vibrant colors help create a compelling world that is quickly filled with all kinds of weapon blasts that any player with a slight interest for sci-fi and experience in the genre (not mandatory but helpful) just has to enjoy.

2. APB Reloaded
APB spent just a few months as a retail product and was promptly shut down… but not forgotten. GamersFirst acquired the rights for this MMO and after a revamp (including some features such as a new district and clan-based combat mechanics, among others) released it to an eager community. APB Reloaded is one of a kind and the mix of third-person shooting and driving is a successful one. The Criminals vs. Enforcers gameplay is an exciting one and the city of San Paro acts as a solid playground. APB Reloaded it´s not a perfect game (well… no game is perfect, all of them have flaws) but GamersFirst has a blockbuster in their hands, a MMO game with many indisputable qualities. If you like non-stop action, this is the one.

1. Team Fortress 2
Valve stormed the market by unleashing Team Fortress 2 as a free-to-play game, offering what is undoubtedly one of the finest shooters ever for free. It’s not just the brilliant cartoon visuals – from which Battlefield Heroes was clearly inspired – or the polished game mechanics, but also the humor that the charismatic characters bring to the matches. If there’s a free shooter out there that everyone must play, that shooter is Team Fortress 2. As long as Valve keeps things balanced between the free and premium players, this is a game that has a fantastic lasting appeal.
This impressive list of free shooters stands to grow even larger throughout the year, and several new MMOFPS and MMOTPS games are in development. Whether they can top any of the games on this list remains to be seen, but they’ll have their hands full. Still, we can’t wait to see where this genre takes us in 2012 and beyond.Remember that we are featuring only the most recent free to play shooters so we are not including free shooter classics such as War Rock, Wolf Team, America’s Army and others.

Top 10 most anticipated games for 2012-2013

Let's face it, we have an incredibly exciting time ahead of us for gaming. First off, we have some absolutely stellar games still coming out on the now ageing consoles, as well as the PC. But, within the next twelve or so months, we should see the release of next-gen consoles, and within the next couple of months, we'll see the release of Nintendo's Wii U console.
Until then, let's go through a list of the most anticipated games coming out over the next year or so. Remember, everyone has different tastes, so you might not agree to our recommendations. Please do comment or e-mail us with submissions and we'll try to keep this updated, or use them in future "top 10" articles.

10.) Far Cry 3
The first Far Cry game I remember fondly, open-world gaming, with lucious environments. But, the third outing in the Far Cry universe is set to really ramp that bar up somewhat, and there's some incredible excitement behind it. The main objective behind Far Cry 3 is to escape an island filled with crazy, blood-thirsty inhabitants.
Far Cry 3 also features co-op gameplay, marking a change from its predecessors. This co-op gameplay can even be enjoyed as two-player split screen. Far Cry 3 is powered by the Dunia 2 engine, one of the first games to be powered by the advanced version of the Dunia engine. We should expect Far Cry 3 toward the end of November, or early-December, depending where you're based.

9.) Borderlands 2
Explained as a 'role-playing shooter', Borderlands 2 is set to expand on the original game, while adding in some new twists, turns, weapons, characters, and more. The AI in Borderlands 2 has been improved, four-player online co-op returns, as well as the usual customizable weapons system, which has been improved.
Gearbox haven't left the graphics department of Borderlands 2 without change, where the team have worked with NVIDIA to add in some great PhysX features. Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, showed off some of the PhysX gameplay when NVIDIA unveiled their GEFORCE GTX 680 GPU. The environment and phsyics play a much bigger role when PhysX is enabled, so Borderlands 2 is something to be excited over.

8.) Assassin's Creed III
Assassin's Creed III takes place before, during, and after the American Revolution, dating between 1753 and 1783. A new protagonist is up for play, half-English and half-Native American man, Connor Kenway. Series' protagonist, Desmond Miles makes an appearance, who must prevent the 2012 apocalypse.
Assassin's Creed III is powered by the AnvilNext engine, and will arrive on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Nintendo's upcoming next-gen console, the Wii U. It will hit consoles first on October 30/31 in the US and EU, and will be released a little under a month later on PC.

7.) MechWarrior Online/Hawken (tie)
I remember the old MechWarrior games on PC from when I was just a young boy. The original games were just oh-so-awesome back in the mid-to-late 90s. Now we have the CryENGINE 3-powered, free-to-play MechWarrior Online coming out later this year. Being a PC-exclusive is enough to be excited about, but the Mech game is powered by Crytek's gorgeous CryENGINE 3.
MechWarrior Online is also a real-time game where one day in the game is equal to 24 hours in the real world. This will add a very different spin on the game, with players jumping into BattleMechs and having the ability to align themselves with one of the Great Houses, or they could form their own Mercenary Corporation, or go it alone.
Tieing with MechWarrior Online is fellow Mech game, Hawken. Hawken is powered by Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 and is also a free-to-play title. Hawken will feature four game modes: team deathmatch, free-for-all deathmatch, "siege" and a currently-unknown game mode.
Hawken is a little more exciting, as it was recently unveiled that it will be compatible with the Oculus Rift VR headset that was on Kickstarter. Hawken will be released on December 12, and hopefully the Oculus Rift VR headset gaming on Hawken is a true next step in Mech immersion.

6.) The Last of Us
The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic third-person survival action-adventure game, and if that wasn't enough of a mouthful of explanation, this should settle your worries: it's being developed by Naughty Dog, the team behind the phenomenal Uncharted series. The Last of Us, like Uncharted, is a PlayStation 3-exclusive, and looks like it might be one of the best games to hit the console since release.
Naughty Dog have a pretty amazing track record, with The Last of Us looking to continue this trend. The Last of Us gives you control of a character named Joe, with AI taking control of your friend, Ellie. The Last of Us is more character-driven than most games, with Naughty Dog introducing a new gameplay mechanic they're calling "dynamic stealth". This new gameplay mechanic allows the player a variety of strategies and techniques to be used each time they approach a new situation, where the enemies will react differently each time.
The Last of Us looks incredibly exciting and is powered by an in-house engine from Naughty Dog. We should expect The Last of Us sometime in 2013, on the PlayStation 3.

5.) Crysis 3
"Will it run Crysis?" is a term that we should all know by now, as the original sandbox first-person shooter from Crytek was a success, both as a game, and as a graphics engine filled with eye candy. The second outing was the developers first foray into consoles, and didn't make the same graphical splash that the first did. But, we've been reassured from Crytek that Crysis 3 will definitely push PC's to their limits in terms of graphics.
Gameplay looks to be amped up, where the nanosuit-powered soldier, Prophet, now sports a very cool looking, and very functional crossbow. Crysis 3 is still featured in New York City, where the city itself has been encased in a giant Nanodome from the corrupt Cell Corporation. Crysis 3 is set 24 years after the events of Crysis 2, landing us in the year 2047.
NYC, after decades of being within the confines of the Nanodome, is now covered in dense swamplands, overgrown trees and rivers. Crysis 3 is powered by CryENGINE 3, so we should expect this vegetation to look prettier than ever, frogs included.
Crysis 3 will hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in February 2013.

4.) PlanetSide 2
PlanetSide 2. This is a big one, folks. PlanetSide 2 is a sequel to the original PlanetSide, which was released back in 2003, and is an MMO coming from Sony Online Entertainment. PlanetSide 2 sports a spankin' new graphics engine, and will support hundreds of players in a continous, large-scale battle.
PlanetSide 2 features three factions, Terral Republic, New Conglomerate, and finally, the Vanu Sovereignty. Players can fight within any of the factions, to try and gain control, of territory and bragging rights from within the game. PlanetSide 2 brings back vehicles into play, along with its on-land vehicles, and usual gun-based combat.
PlanetSide 2's stand out feature is going to be its territory system, where it plays a much bigger role in the sequel, than its predecessor. PlanetSide 2 is powered by SOE's Forgelight Engine, with the physics side of things being handled by NVIDIA's PhysX API. The combination of the engine and PhysX will allow for much better in-game vehicle physics, as well as bullets being simulated by the physics engine, meaning players will have to compensate for gravity when aiming, and shooting.
PlanetSide 2's release date is still TBA.

 3.) DotA 2
As we get to the business end of our Top 10 most anticipated games for 2012-2013, they continue getting bigger, and bigger. How could we leave out DotA 2? The original DotA (Defense of the Ancients) started out as a mod for Warcraft III, and has enjoyed incredible success in the professional, and casual gaming scene since.
The company behind Half-Life, and digital distribution software Steam, Valve, acquired the trademark for DotA 2, surprising many gamers across the world. At the same time, it also gave gamers confidence that Valve would do their best to please their fans with a true sequel to the mod for Warcraft III.
DotA 2 has since turned into a free-to-play game, with Valve making money from the game through DotA 2's in-game store, DotA Store. Within DotA Store, players can purchase in-game items, where items are developed in-house by Valve, as well as products released from the Steam Workshop.
DotA has a release date of sometime this year, but nothing has been set in concrete yet.

2.) Grand Theft Auto V
We should all know, or have played, or still play, Grand Theft Auto games by now. The series has been one of the most successful in gaming to-date, and the latest instalment is set to raise that bar by eleventy million. GTA V is the fifteenth game (15!!) in the GTA series, and is set in fictional Los Santos, in the state of San Andreas, and its surrounding areas, based on a modern-day Los Angeles and Southern California.
We should all know what to expect from GTA V, but there will also be some new content to keep the game feeling fresh. GTA V is set to include "crews" which are similar to what was introduced in the Rockstar-produced Max Payne 3. Rockstar's Social Club functionality will bridge players and their crews across multiple titles, that start with Max Payne 3 and GTA V.
There's not much else that has been shown off about the game, apart from some very delicious screenshots showing off some action from within a fighter jet, a sports car, a roadbike, and more. Grand Theft Auto V is set to become not just one of the biggest launches of 2012, but one of the biggest launches, ever.
GTA V currently has no firm release date.

1.) Half-Life 3
Drum roll, please! We're finally at our number one most anticipated game for 2012-2013, Half-Life 3. Half-Life requires no introduction, and has been one of the most successful franchises, ever.
There is barely any information on the game, apart from some rumors and hearsay, but we know it has to be coming. We pray each night it's coming, and we keep a warm spot on our hard drives for it when it does arrive. The next instalment in Gordon Freeman's life could be the last, and most probably, the best.
I have expectations that we will see this game in some form next year, where I hope to see it announced next to a next-generation Source engine announcement. Maybe we'll see it as an exclusive killer-app for the rumored Steam Box. Maybe the Mayan's were right, and the world ends on December 21, 2012, and we'll never get to see the game at all.
Let's hope that doesn't happen, shall we? You can rest assured, as soon as there's some news on Half-Life 3, we'll be posting all about it.

Storm Online

The legends speak of Gods who were looking to create a world of intelligent creatures; a world ruled by wisdom and compassion. A paradise of ideals, not in the skies but in the very heart of Earth itself.

Ancient China was selected to fulfill the Gods' wishes and it was not long before human life was breathed into this vast land. These newly created humans populated a valley near northern Ancient China and, under the Gods' guidance, were intelligent, courageous and hardworking, reflecting traits of the Gods themselves. Immensely proud and delighted at their creation, the Gods conferred the name Stable Earth to this valley.

The people of Stable Earth had every reason to feel privileged and self-important. After all, they were painstakingly created by the Gods themselves. As such, this noble tribe remained loyal to the Gods, firmly standing by their side in the breakout of the First Great Battle of the Gods and Devils. In return, the Gods lavishly showered upon them a variety of divine rewards to express their gratitude.

Heeding the Gods' divine guidance, the people of Stable Earth established their city fortress in the northern foothills of Ancient China, a strategic location to guard the northern pass while enjoying close proximity to the Gods at the same time.

The City of Stable Earth was thus named as the people longed for a strong relationship with the Gods whom they believe will bless them with eternal prosperity and peace. However, as years passed and the tense situation with the Devil Tribe offered no miraculous solutions, the tribe soon realized that the outcome of the war would depend largely on them alone

The battle raged on, tearing apart the beautiful land of Ancient China in its strife. The powerful troops from Fiery Sky were more malicious and cunning and hence, soon crumbled the defenses of the Stable Earth army. When all seemed lost in the face of sure death, a Stable Earth warrior appeared and rebelled against the Fiery Sky soldiers, gradually forcing the people of Fiery Sky into the southern mountains and ending the First Great Battle in victory.

Ironically, the triumph of the Stable Earth warrior would also be his downfall. Hoodwinked by scheming traitors, the Stable Earth Elders soon grew fearful and suspicious of the warriors power and banished him to the far eastern valley of Ancient China.

Amidst the chaos of the First Great Battle, yet another human race was uncovered. Living in the remote west of Ancient China, a group of hardy desert wanderers call the Green Fog Desert home. Choosing the life of quiet isolation for many years meant no one really understood this race nor their origins though they were rumoured to have the blood of the phoenix pulsating in their veins. Faced with the harsh living environment as well as the constant harassment of Fiery Skys refugees, this group gradually picked up a variety of survival and fighting skills which would make them legendary heroes in time to come.

The end of the First Great Battle marked the rise of constant tension and suspicion amongst the human races in Ancient China. The people of Stable Earth built a fortress at the northern foothills, using this base to keep tabs on the people of Fiery Sky. Unwilling to accept defeat, the Fiery Sky troops followed suit, and erected their fortress at the southern land, proudly calling it the City of Fiery Sky and vowing to rise and rule the world once more.

Over at the east valley, the exiled warrior had raised his own army and fortress in the City of Vast Clouds. Succumbing to illness in his final moments, the exiled warrior swore revenge on Stable Earth for the injustice he had received.

As the exiled warrior died in his deathbed in the east, worldly ambitions were gripping the people in the west of Ancient China. Surveying the growing tension around them, the people of Green Fog Desert soon joined the fray with the fourth fortress of Ancient China the City of Encroaching Winds.

The four kingdoms have risen, the stage is set. As the turbulent wind blows and turmoil whirls, the call for world domination beckons. History shall be rewritten and a new legend will be created by you.

Dragon Nest

Dragon Nest is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG developed by Eyedentity. It uses a non-targeting combat system ensuring that players have complete control over every single one of their character's movements. Dragon Nest requires users to advance their characters by teaming up and traveling into instanced dungeons.

Dragon Nest incorporates non-targeting system gameplay to create a fast paced action filled experience. Players choose from a range of hero classes, characters that are of the Dragon Nest storyline that can equip customizable gear and weapons. Devastating skills can also be learned, to increase one's power when defeating monsters in instanced dungeons or defeating other players in PVP.

Dragon Nest also has the advantage of being nearly completely skill based, with lower level characters being able to defeat high level characters in PVP with skill alone. This allows a more experienced player that is of a lower level to dominate a less experienced player of a higher level player in PVP.

Dragon Nest characters exist in worlds. Players can create up to 4 characters per world. These characters cannot interact with one another, with the exception of mailing each other. Players can have 6 choices when creating a character. They are Warrior, Archer, Sorceress, Cleric, Academic and Kali. The Academic and Kali classes is not yet available in some releases. The Warrior, Archer and Kali class start their journey in Prairie Town (Ironwood Village in NA Version), while the Cleric, Sorceress and Academic classes start their journey in Mana Ridge. After reaching level 15, they can choose to advance to second class, and third class at level 45. At these job advancements, they can choose to further specialize in one aspect of their skill sets.

The Cash Shop is an in game shop where players use real-life currency to purchase equipment not available in-game. Special items can also help in the development of the characters.

In Dragon Nest NA, the Cash Shop is known as the "Dragon Vault".

Gaming etiquette

Gaming etiquette (also called gamer etiquette or video game etiquette) refers to the norms adopted while playing multi-player video games. While specific genres and games have their own accepted rules of conduct, some of these rules are universal across almost all games.

Universal gaming etiquette

Regardless of the game, certain behaviours are universally encouraged or discouraged in multi-player video games. Cheating is almost never acceptable unless all players agree it should be allowed, as it causes the game to become unfair and detracts from the enjoyment of legitimate players. In games involving communication between players, it is considered impolite to brag and gloat about one's accomplishments, though this is more acceptable in some games than others. In games where most communication between players is through text, it's usually considered rude to type in all caps. Camping in games such as first-person shooters is generally a legitimate strategy, though some players consider it to be unfair or bad manners. In games with split screen(played on the same screen) it is considered unsporting to look at an opponents actions by looking at their portion of the screen. This method is also known as screening, screen cheating, or screen looking.
In any game, players are generally encouraged to be polite and courteous to one another, and avoid excessive profanity and trash talk. Players are also expected to be friendly and welcoming to newcomers, and remember that their lack of skill or understanding of the game is only due to their lack of experience with the game. It's also a generally accepted rule that a game's events and outcomes shouldn't be taken personally by the players.

Variations between games

In most games, it's considered bad manners to quit before the game has ended, especially in games where a player's disconnect will trigger a spike in latency which causes the other players to have to wait. However, in other games such as Starcraft II, the opposite is true: it's considered bad manners to stay in a game after a clear victor has been decided because the victory requirement to destroy all of an opponent's forces is seen as a waste of the player's time. However, in games where leaving early is encouraged, the player is often still expected to say 'gg' or 'good game' before leaving; failure to do so can be considered bad manners. However, saying 'gg' on behalf of a losing opponent is impolite, as it encourages the other player to quit and suggests the game has already been won.
In games involving circumstances where many players need to meet at an agreed-upon time, such as in a raid in World of Warcraft, it's considered bad etiquette to show up late or leave the computer during a game without the consent of teammates.

In team games where the teams are automatically balanced, it's impolite for players to stop playing or go AFK rather than simply leaving the game and allowing someone else to take their spot, because this can put their team at a disadvantage.

Wallhacking

Wallhacking allows a player to see through solid or opaque objects and/or manipulate or remove textures, to know in advance when an opponent is about to come into targeting range from an occluded area. This can be done by making wall textures transparent, or modifying the game maps to insert polygonal holes into otherwise solid walls.

As with the aimbot, wallhacking relies on the fact that an FPS server usually sends raw positional information for all players in the game, and leaves it up to the client's 3D renderer to hide opponents behind walls, in plant foliage, or in dark shadows. If the game map rendering could be turned off completely, all players could be seen moving around in what appears to be empty space. Complete map hiding offers no advantage to a cheater as they would be unable to navigate the invisible map pathways and obstacles. However if only certain surfaces are made transparent or removed, this leaves just enough of an outline of the world to allow the cheater still to navigate it easily.

When used in conjunction certain wallhacks allow the player to shoot through solid objects, which is known as "opk" (One Place Killing) in such games as Combat Arms, because the killer can generally stay in one spot. A subset known as WhiteWalls removes the color/texture from objects in the surrounding environment, providing distinct contrast to opposition character models, which remain colored/textured. (See ESP for an evolution of the WallHack.) A subset of wallhacking is also called "chamming" (see Skin Cheats).

Three Gold Making Strategies for Mists of Pandaria’s First Month

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria has launched and making quick WoW Gold is on everyone’s mind. Quest grinding continues to be the most obvious way to gain coin, but there are three more methods that can really boost your wealth by the end of October.

Farm and Sell Crafting Mats
WoW Insider’s resident Gold Capped columnist Basil Bernsten advised that farming for the new profession crafting materials will be lucrative source of WoW Gold during the first month of the expansion. High demand for such crafting materials coupled with the low supply will blow auction prices through the roof, resulting in handsome profits for any enterprising farmer-seller.

“Farmed materials are worth way more in the beginning of an expansion than after a few weeks,” he said. “If you have a miner, skinner, herbalist, or fisher, you'll be able to make as much money as you want with surprisingly little work for the first few weeks.”

Bernsten said demand will be so brisk that the standard practice of undercutting – or posting the lowest price possible on the auction house – should be avoided.

“The trick is to find a price where everything you list gets sold in 48 hours. This price should not be the lowest price on the AH; in fact, you probably want to overcut instead of undercutting. Pick a price where you're lower than any really large batches posted, and ignore the really low auctions. They'll get bought out immediately. In fact, one perfectly legitimate plan I've seen work is to post all your stock at a very high price -- like 50% above average, and simply wait for someone vying for a realm first achievement or something to come in and clean out the AH.”

Farm Motes from The Tillers Faction
Bernsten also suggested farming in the most literal way. In the Valley of the Four Winds, The Tillers faction will let you run a real farm. Plant the Songbell Seed and harvest the Mote of Harmony from it each day.

“If you have the means to turn those motes into gold with a max level crafting profession, 16 motes a day at exalted (with The Tillers) will be a significant amount of gold,” he said.

Buy and Sell Level 83 – 84 MoP Items
Meanwhile, Jim Younkin at PowerWordGold.net recommends stockpiling on level 83 – 84 MoP items. “Cheap” here means armor costing below 55 Gold for armor and weapons below 75 Gold, which can then be sold for a profit “in a few weeks when the initial 85 – 90 leveling rush dies down.”

Younkin likened level 83 – 84 MoP items to the level 77 – 80 Cataclysm items which raked in the profits in the last expansion as players with multiple alts purchased new expansion gear from the auction house. He said auction hunters planning to stockpile these items should plug in these search parameters:

    Min Item Level: 363
    Max Item Level: 510
    Min Level: 83
    Max Level: 84

Younkin cautions though that the payoff may not be wholly immediate. Sellers could get quick WoW Gold posting these items when auction stocks start to dwindle, but the real heavy profits could come in “a month or two” when alt-leveling kicks into full speed and sales skyrocket.
